Milkin' it...

The other night I made cookies and so we pulled out the milk. As I looked at the carton, I realized how strange it is that drinking UHT milk from a box is now normal to me. I mean look at the carton. Does it look like milk lives in that box to you?

I can recognize the French words in big font, then the English beneath it. But after that... My guess is German, Spanish, Greek, more Greek, Italian, Portuguese, and...Hungarian? Any other educated guesses?

I particularly like the little cartoon on the side. I read it the other night and thought, "That's funny - that's bloggable." But then when I pulled out the carton for its photo shoot, the cartoon wasn't as cute and funny. Then I realized they each have different cartoon texts! How creative. We bought this in a pack of six and have already recycled two, but I can tell you (roughly) what these four milk carton-toons are saying.
1: Milk is part of a balanced diet. Recycling me contributes to a balanced planet.
2: Cows turn grass into milk. Recycling turns me into paper towels! (This is the one I spotted over cookies.)
3: The calcium in milk is a gift to your bones. Recycling me is great way to make gift wrap paper!
4: Milk gives you energy. Recycling me saves energy!

I don't think Hungarian is there, at least, I don't see the word "tej" which is "milk". Go figure! The fourth language down after the French one that covers the fourth and fifth lines (entirely in blue) is Russian. I'd recognize those letters in a nightmare!!!

We don't drink the UHT milk here but we can buy it when you get here if you prefer it. Soooo excited about seeing you and Jonathan!

Back it up there a second. Are you saying that in addition to multiple malls, pizza and fountain drinks with ice upon request...you guys ALSO have real milk??

I should warn you: we may never leave Hungary. :)

There is one very important detail you left out.

WHAT KIND OF COOKIES?

I remember you guys being able to get raw milk, you can't get regular pasteurized milk?!

What will it be that you will ask your french friends to enjoy so you may live vicariously through them if (when) you move back to the states?

Hi Kyle,

I actually did write about the cookies, then deleted it thinking people wouldn't care. But since you asked, we had peanut butter cookies. The recipe we tried wasn't the best. There's one on our recipes blog that I think is the best.

Good question about vicarious living from the US. I'll ponder a bit and then get back to you.

What I think is funny is how the translations are never the same in each language.

The French one says "consume rapidly after opening and keep at 6°C". The English one says "Use within three days, keep refrigerated". I don't know what the German one is, but there's no mention of temperature. The Dutch one says "Please keep cold, max 6°". The Spanish one says "Keep in a fridge at 6°, consume rapidly, contains 1.5% fat", while the Portugese one says "Needs refrigeration"!!
