Waiting at the bus stop, just a block over from our apartment, to get downtown. Can you spot Jonathan in the photo?
Recently my friend Stephanie did a great post on what she sees on her commute to work in NYC. I loved it, so I swiped the idea. All innovative idea credit goes to the Little Peach in the Big Apple.
I know this isn't really a traditional tag-type post, but I would love to see Peggy do one from Seattle, Chris-with-Kate's-help cover his motorcycle commute, Marcy take us on her two-hour to-and-fro, Anna share from a mother's perspective, Nicole let us co-pilot the metro-ATL rush hour, C-Love show us commuting in Turkey, etc...
So, let's get started. This is the morning commute, à la Masson.

A TCL bus arrives. We hold out to wait for the next one, which we know from experience will have more available seats. I'm telling you, we've got this commute thing down pat.

Oncoming traffic on the 'main drag' of our neighborhood.

Attempted self-portrait on the bus ride

Crossing from 'the burbs' over the Saone River into Lyon. Can you see Fourviere Basilica up on the hill?

Walking into Perrache station, where buses, shuttles, trains, métro and tramways meet.

I was trying to be really smooth by subtly taking photos with the camera at my waist. Would have worked better if the lens wasn't behind my scarf part of the time!

The Vélo'V stand outside of Perrache station. But we opt for walking.

Leaving Perrache station, heading across Place Carnot on the way to Place Bellecour.

This pedestrian street connects Perrache station and Place Bellecour. It's about a 10-minute walk, or you can take the métro. I like the walk.

Restaurants and cafés were still setting up their terrace tables and seating.

A woman buying breakfast (I assume). Many of these shops advertise a light breakfast for about 4 euros ($6). It's usually a pastry, coffee and juice - which sounds like a sugar overload to me.

Place Bellecour - we're halfway there! This is where our commutes split. Jonathan crosses the Rhone River to his school and I keep going north.

The clocktower at Place Bellecour

Métro entrances. The umbrellas are where they hand out the freebie newspapers, such as 20 minutes, LyonPlus and Le Métro.

Going underground.

Don't forget to scan your TCL pass or validate your tickets as you go into the métro! You can buy tickets from the automated machines on the left. A one-way ticket is 1.60 euros (about $2.50) and can be used for an hour on any of the Lyon public transportation routes. An all-day pass is 4.40 euros (about $6.70).

Everyone on the métro!

Exiting the métro at the corner of Place de la Croix Rousse. We made it!

Shall I chronicle my commute from the living room to the office? Those stairs can be rough! Your mom picks my pocket often!
Love,
Dad
Its so..... CLEAN! I wish my commute in Bombay was that clean! lol.

Sounds like an interesting/foreign commute. If you decide to chronicle it, I think Kari would appreciate another look at your (clean) hungarian 'throne'. Well, maybe not so much.
Jonathan
Neat! It's cool to see your commute and it's nice that you and Jonathan get to go halfway together :) I think in NY, you get arrested for taking pictures in the subways. Seriously, you have to have some kind of permission slip. Although that camera-under-the-scarf idea, I should've tried that!
The free Le Métro paper...does it have a green globe on it?
I really enjoyed this! I'll have to give it a go though mine won't be half as interesting. Love you!! - the Kate Winslet look-alike x
I loved this, as I did with Steph's post. Mine would not be so interesting. You know, if you ever move back to the US, you are going to miss those old buildings and brick/cobblestone/etc. streets!
What a fabulous idea! I may steal it from you if that's okay. You have a beautiful commute. :)
I'm going to attempt to do this tomorrow or Wednesday morning...not sure how great my pics will be zooming down the interstate at 75mph! Your photos are really lovely, I envy your morning walks.
Tina's right, Lyon IS so clean! Its the first thing that hit me as well. I really wish Bombay was that clean too :(
Le "self-potrait" n'est pas mal, Kari! En fait, c'est bien!
I love this, especially after seeing these things for myself just a few days ago! Ha!
LOVE the new banner! You seriously minimized our culture shock!
